Upper Tywi Valley
At Llandovery the river (Towy in English) bends north and becomes the stuff of legend. Even before it gets to our village it goes through quite a gorge, and from Rhandirmwyn on it gets ever wilder until, beyond the dam, it becomes the huge expanse of Llyn Brianne. It was here that the character immortalised by Henry Fielding as Tom Jones, but known here as Twm Sion Cati, had some of his most memorable escapades. It was here too that the longest running conservation effort in the world first started at the beginning of the last century when it was realised that the last few red kites in Britain were hiding near the Dinas.
