Empire medal home for Christmas!

William Theophilus has brought to our attention a Local story that is gaining a lot of interest.

Clare Snowdon  (South Wales Guardian) writes –

“A metal-detecting enthusiast from the Tywi Valley has discovered a silver war medallion thought to be nearly 100 years old and hopes to reunite it with the family of its owner.

The Llandovery man, who does not wish to be named, found it while detecting at a location in the town.

The badge was issued by King George V from 1916 to honour military soldiers who were discharged because of wounds or illness. The sterling silver badge bears the King’s initials and the inscriptions ‘For King and Empire and Services Rendered’. The badge was not simply and honour; it served a practical purpose. At the time, men of military age who ere not obviously in the service were sometimes accosted or insulted by civilians presenting them with white feathers – a symbol of cowardice – for shirking their duty. The badge served as a symbol that the wearer’s duty had been honourably fulfilled.

Each badge is unique to each soldier – this badge is inscribed with the code B48659
