Roger Hemmings

Trist cofnodi marwolaeth Roger Hemmings, Bwthyn Tywi.

It is with great sadness that we note the death of Roger Hemmings, Towy Cottage, Cilycwm.

His love of fishing and the closeness of the Tywi encouraged his move to this area some 24 years ago.  He soon settled into community life in the area including being the first treasurer of Cymdeithas Gymunedol Cilycwm (Community Association) and he was also the present-day chair of the committee.  He was instrumental in the development of the community led cycle trail and walks in Cwm Rhaeadr which remains a sanctuary for all.

Other roles he undertook include –  trustee for the Cilycwm Cae Chwarae (Playing Field); support for the carnival and Cilycwm Show; an active member involved in Gŵyl Bro Dinefwr’s musical weekends in Glangwenlais and giving guidance to the Towy & Cothi Hunt.

His final wish was to have a “Pure Cremation” with no public service.  We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Una and his family.

Roger’s passing has created a void in Cilycwm as he was involved in many aspects of life in the community and I asked him to assist in drawing out a flexible and effective constitution for an organisation I was chair of in 2005, and my dial–up modem was lethargically slow,as it was in those days without an effective router as we have now.

I and others with me, found him to be quite a methodical thinker and assisted immensely in bringing matters to a satisfactory conclusion.

A good engineering mind to boot as well, winning the ‘Whacky Races’ he devised in Cwmrhaedar Forestry, back in the 2,000ths, and so much involved with so many aspects of life around here which has already been mentioned.

Quite a unique individual, innovative and willing to shed new light on to problems as they developed and usually involved when they were solved.

Roger will be sorely missed by many. His loyal and consistent attendance at the Neuadd provided many evenings of laughter. His willingness to give his active support to all community projects was exceptional. His help in setting up the unique Welsh National Opera event was monumental and for which I was very grateful.
